Cost-based closed-contour representations

چکیده
bstract. This paper presents an efficient technique for linking dge points in order to generate a closed-contour representation. It s based on the consecutive use of global and local schemes. In oth cases it is assumed that the original intensity image, as well as ts corresponding edge map, are given as inputs to the algorithm. he global scheme computes an initial representation by connecting dge points minimizing a global measure based on spatial informaion (3D space). It relies on the use of graph theory and exploits the dge points’ distribution through the given edge map, as well as heir corresponding intensity values. At the same time spurious edge oints are removed by a morphological filter. The local scheme fially generates closed contours, linking open boundaries, by using local cost function that takes into account both spatial and topoogical information. Experimental results with different images, toether with comparisons with a previous technique, are resented. © 2007 SPIE and IS&T. DOI: 10.1117/1.2731799

The role of surface-based representations of shape in visual object recognition.
This study contrasted the role of surfaces and volumetric shape primitives in three-dimensional object recognition. Observers (N = 50) matched subsets of closed contour fragments, surfaces, or volumetric parts to whole novel objects during a whole-part matching task. Three factors were further manipulated: part viewpoint (either same or different between component parts and whole objects), surf...
متن کاملRadial Frequency Analysis of Contour Shapes in the Visual Cortex
Cumulative psychophysical evidence suggests that the shape of closed contours is analysed by means of their radial frequency components (RFC). However, neurophysiological evidence for RFC-based representations is still missing. We investigated the representation of radial frequency in the human visual cortex with functional magnetic resonance imaging. We parametrically varied the radial frequen...
متن کاملA cognitive evaluation procedure for contour based shape descriptors
Present image processing algorithms are unable to extract a neat and closed contour of an object of interest from a natural image. Advanced contour detection algorithms extract the contour of an object of interest from a natural scene with a side effect of depletion of the contour. Hence in order to perform well in a real world scenario, object recognition algorithms should be robust to contour...
متن کاملFast Construction of Dynamic and Multi-Resolution 360° Panoramas from Video Sequences
This paper presents a unified approach to automatically build dynamic and multi-resolution 360° panoramic (DMP) representations from image sequences captured by hand-held cameras mainly undertaking rotation and zooming for natural scenes with moving targets. A simple (yet stable) rigid motion model and a closed-loop-based mosaicing algorithm are proposed to generate cylindrical mosaics automati...
متن کاملA FILTERED B-SPLINE MODEL OF SCANNED DIGITAL IMAGES
We present an approach for modeling and filtering digitally scanned images. The digital contour of an image is segmented to identify the linear segments, the nonlinear segments and critical corners. The nonlinear segments are modeled by B-splines. To remove the contour noise, we propose a weighted least q m s model to account for both the fitness of the splines as well as their approximate cur...
